October's Limited Release Seedlings

Each month, we launch limited release seedlings that feature seasonally driven, food-forward varieties that are sure to stand out on your Farmstand and make an impression in the kitchen. They will only be available while supplies last so don’t wait to place your order!

October’s featured seedlings are Pink Celery and Red Splendor Mustard! Our unique varieties are exactly what you need to add some color to your Farmstand and stave off those cloudy weather blues. Get to know these showstoppers and don’t forget to pick them up before supplies run out in our shop!

Pink Celery

An eye-catching cutting celery variety from China, Pink Celery is favored in metropolitan areas where it is used in high-end restaurants. Its thin stalks range from a pale pink to bright fuchsia and will be ready to harvest in 6 to 8 weeks. This plant is perfect for raw toppings and building bases for soups and stews.


Pink Celery’s flavor will change depending on how it is prepared. It has a robust herbal flavor with a crunchy texture when eaten raw and will soften, developing a sweet and tender flavor when cooked. Chop this variety and add it to salads or grain bowls as a garnish for an exciting display of color or use it to add traditional celery flavor to stocks, soups, and other sautéed dishes.

Plant Care

This variety is much easier to grow than traditional European celery because it is hardy against frosts, keeps its color in heat, and does not require much maintenance. It can be harvested as needed by cutting stalks a few centimeters above the base. Pink celery will not form thick stalks like those found at the store so you should not wait for its width to increase prior to harvesting.

Red Splendor Mustard

Red Splendor Mustard develops a fun, frilly leaf with deep lobes that has more character than rounder mustard green varieties. It is stained dark red, which can soften with age, with green stems and undersides. This variety will be ready to harvest in 4 to 6 weeks and can be used as baby greens or grown to maturity.


Unlike curly and flat leaf mustard greens, which have a subtler flavor, Red Splendor Mustard has a hot mustardy flavor. Its flavor will become more concentrated over time as the plant matures so it is important to harvest at different growth stages depending on the desired flavor. This variety can be harvested when young to be used as baby greens in raw salads or left to mature for heartier uses.

Plant Care

Leaves will produce upright growth however they may extend outward once they become overgrown. The ideal harvest size is when leaves are about 3” to 6” and can be harvested multiple times using the cut and come again method.

Antioxidants: Red mustard is high in flavonoids, beta-carotene, lutein, and vitamins C and E which are important in helping to fight diseases.

Heart Health: Anothocyanins, which give colorful fruits and vegetables their red-pruple hues, have been associated with decreasing the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Healthy Bones: It is an excellent source of Vitamin K which powers the development of healthy bones and helps with blood clotting.

Immune and Body Support: More than ⅓ of your daily Vitamin C requirements can be found in just 1 cup of mustard greens.

Eye Health: Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that benefit eye health and are found in mustard greens.
