Each month, we launch limited release seedlings that feature seasonally driven, food forward varieties that are sure to stand out on your Farmstand and make an impression in the kitchen. They will only be available while supplies last so don’t wait to place your order!



September’s featured seedlings are Bel Fiore Radicchio and Red Cloud Tatsoi! These seedlings are the perfect introduction to the cooler weather ahead. Packed with nutrients, perfect companions to Fall inspired dishes, and beautifully hued, they’re sure to become quick favorites. Get to know these limited release varieties below and shop them here!

Bel Fiore Radicchio

This classic winter lettuce is speckled with striking red spots and will be ready to harvest in 8 to 12 weeks. It will produce a head that is full but loose, similar to butterhead lettuce, with striking red spotting. The name Bel Fiore is Italian for “beautiful flower” because this variety resembles a flower when the center of its head is opened.

Flavor

Radicchio, like other members of the chicory family, carries a slightly bitter spiciness. It can be eaten raw or cooked in order to bring out a natural sweetness without diluting its original flavor. When prepared in salads, it is often paired with other greens so as not to overpower the dish.

Radicchio can be quite intense so it is important to pair it with ingredients that will tame its bitterness. Here are some suggestions:

• Acids: citrus juice, fruit, and vinaigrettes
• Salty and Briny: olives, capers, and anchovy
• Fatty: cheese, bacon, and olive oil
• Nuts: Walnuts and pecans

Plant Care

As mentioned above, Bel Fiore differs from other radicchio varieties in that instead of forming a compact head, it is more open and loose. Any leaves developing on the outside of the head that become discolored or unhealthy can be removed in order to deter pests and disease.

Once a loose head has formed, radicchio can be harvested in the same way you would harvest a cabbage or head of lettuce: remove the grow cup from the Farmstand and gently cut the stem where it meets the grow medium.

Red Cloud Tatsoi

Red Cloud Tatsoi is a splashy, vibrant version of a fan favorite! This is a vigorous grower so it will be fully mature in 4 to 9 weeks for quick harvesting. Tatsoi produces long stems with medium-sized, spoon-shaped leaves that are stained a dark red-violet. It is a fresh way to bring the fall color palette into your dishes.

Flavor

This tatsoi variety has a mild, sweet mustard flavor with a juicy, crunchy texture. It is a functional green as it can be harvested young for baby greens that are great in salads or left to produce larger leaves that can hold up in a stir-fry!

Plant Care

It does not get much easier than growing Red Cloud Tatsoi! It develops uniform, upright growth at a rapid pace so once it has been planted, all you need to do is watch it grow and enjoy your harvests.

Good Vision: This plant is rich in beta carotene and Vitamin A which is essential for good vision as well as healthy mucus membranes.

Happy Cells: Tatsoi is high in folate. This is essential in the formation of red blood cells as well as healthy cell growth and function.

Healthy Bones: It is an excellent source of Vitamin K which powers the development of healthy bones and helps with blood clotting.

Immune and Body Support: Tatsoi contains Vitamin C, a nutrient that powers the formation of blood vessels, muscle, and cartilage in bones, as well as the proper functioning of the immune system.
