How do I test and adjust my pH?

Whether you're using our pH Test Kit or a digital pH Pen, we’ll walk you through how to measure and adjust your water's pH with confidence.

pH Test Kit + Liquid pH Down
  1. Fill the test bottle with about 5 mL of water from your Farmstand reservoir.
  2. Add 5 drops of pH test solution, cap the bottle, and give it a gentle swirl.
  3. Use the included color chart to identify the pH level of your water. The ideal range is 5.8–6.2.
  4. If your reading is above 6.2, ensure your pump is running, then use the included pipette to add 5–10 mL of pH Down to your reservoir (5 mL if slightly high, 10 mL if over 7.0). Let the pump circulate for 5 minutes, then re-test.
  5. If your pH is too low, try removing a few gallons from the tank and replacing them with fresh water to help raise the overall pH. Re-test and repeat as needed.
  6. With time, you’ll get a feel for how much pH Down is typically needed to bring your water into the desired range.

pH Pen + Liquid pH Down
  1. Rinse the pH pen sensor with clean water before use.
  2. Collect a sample of your reservoir water in a clean container.
  3. Turn on the pen and place it in the water (don’t submerge past the immersion line).
  4. Gently stir the pen for ~30 seconds to allow the reading to stabilize. Aim for a reading between 5.8–6.2.
  5. If your pH is above that range, ensure the pump is running, then add 5–10 mL of pH Down. Let the water circulate for 5 minutes before re-testing. Repeat the process until you reach your desired range.
  6. If the pH is too low, swap a few gallons of water with fresh tap water and re-test.
